The Year of Stars
My niece Kathy G began listening for the name of years in 2010. This is what she's heard:
- 2010: The Year of Positive Thinking
- 2011: The Year of Playfulness
- 2012: The Year of Science (and Cake)
- 2013:The Year of Stars
Words from Buzzard's Roost Solo Hike 1/1/13 2013 is the elusive year. The year that just doesn't want to be named, because it knows what it is - it knows its intentions, and there are many. To be brave, to be patient, to be open to the next adventure. There are seeds and soil for the roots and branches. There will be shade for sunny days, and windbreak for stormy days. There will be light. There will be words. There will be laughter where friends gather, and perfect peace in the solitude. The name for this year is elusive now, but it will be. Maybe it is the Year at Grace Pace. The Year of Safe Places. The Year of Chasing Light. The year that knew itself too well to be named in haste. The year that got to know you. The year that loved you well. - With Love, ♥ Kathleen 1/1/13

Coyote Sighting
June 7
Bringing the dogs back from the vet, I noticed a buzzard on the first corner of our little neighborhood. When I looked to see what he was feeding on, I saw that it was a coyote.

And now a poem about dolphins...
ADDRESS TO THE CEILING
K. Michel -
the dolphin was once a land animal
it walked around and drew breath
under the pressure of climate conditions
the dolphin was driven over a few millennia
in the direction of the water
its once fully-formed legs grew shorter
and shorter till they virtually disappeared
what the dolphin retained from life
on dry land were the lungs
in evolutionary terms that’s odd since
what good are they under water
probably it’s a kind of use
that’s beneficial albeit indirect
– think for instance of body hair
coccyges or in a wider context
the continued survival of poets –
perhaps the evolutionary bonus is
that it enables the dolphin to
surface now and then
to leap out of the water
and cast a glance at the blue
or starry or cloudy sky
and the coast
Translated by Paul Vincent

Coyote Sighting
November 30th, 2010.
A motion light came by the office behind the thrift store
when I was on the back step. I moved over to see what it was.
At first I thought it was a fox, but it was too big and too grey.
It moved forward slightly, looked around.
It was gone in less than a minute.

Impermanance
View things compounded from causes
To be like twinkling stars, figments seen with an
eye disease,
The flickering light of a butter lamp, magical
illusions.
Dew, bubbles, dreams, lightning, and clouds.
